Choose Parts
Choosing parts is the primary method for customizing your character's appearance in EmoteLab. It allows you to choose from different variations of character parts such as eyes, hair, clothing, accessories, and more. Each part group contains multiple variations that you can cycle through to find the perfect combination for your character.
Locating the Choose Parts List
The Choose Parts list is located in the Parts tab (clothing/apparel icon), typically on the right side of the interface.
Understanding the Choose Parts List
The Choose Parts list displays all available part groups for the currently loaded model. Each entry in the list represents one part group and shows:

- Part Group Name: The name of the part category (e.g., "Eye", "Hair", "Shirt")
- Active Index: A number showing which variation is currently selected. A dash
-is shown when no part is selected - Navigation Buttons: Left arrow
<and right arrow>buttons to cycle through available parts
The list is scrollable, so you can browse through all available part groups even if there are many of them.
Group Types
- Required Groups: At least one part must always be active in this group. Some parts are essential for the character to look correct. For example, a character without eyes would look incomplete, so eyes are typically marked as Required.
- DefaultOn Groups: All parts can be turned off, but the first part is active by default.
- DefaultOff Groups: All parts can be turned off, and none are active by default.
Each group can have one or more part variations and only one variation can be active at a time (or none for optional groups). While the interface doesn't explicitly label groups by type, you can identify them by their behavior. It is expected that some parts cannot be turned off.
The navigation buttons (< and >) may be enabled or disabled depending on the group. When the group has no parts (nothing to select) or the group has one part and is Required type (cannot be turned off), the navigation buttons will be disabled.

Troubleshooting
Can't Change a Part
- Required single part: The group has only one part and is Required type—this cannot be changed
- No parts available: The group has no parts defined in the model
Part Doesn't Appear on Character
- Part is "off": You may have cycled to the "off" state (active index shows "-")
- Part is blocked or hard to spot: Some parts can be small and hard to spot sometimes. It is also possible that the part is blocked by other features (e.g., ears behind the hair). Check the full part list to see what the part looks like and where the part is located.
